The Real Me vs the Not Me

Sometimes I google myself to check what comes up. In case anyone out there tries hunting for me, I hope they realize not every Gwen Phua is me, even though it isn’t a common name. Most of the results do point to me, due to the large number of app reviews I’ve written in the past. Unfortunately, the top listing, the Gwen Phua on LinkedIn, is NOT me.…  Read More »

Deleted But Revived

On Friday, my entire site got deleted. Not by me. I’m sharing a hosting account with my dad’s company, and the web developer redoing the company website did something that got the folder containing my entire Wordpress site deleted. This was why I was very very reluctant to give them cPanel access.

It was a disaster to me. When I called the developer to complain, the guy said he’d check on it. He spent a good amount of time talking to his developer. In the meantime while I was waiting, I kept thinking, Why now? I don’t have the time to redo my entire site from scratch!…  Read More »

The Dragon and the Stars—Aurora Award Winner

The Dragon and the Stars has won Canada’s 2011 Prix Aurora Award in the category of Best English Related Work. Here’s a picture of the editors, Derwin Mak and Eric Choi, accepting the award. The anthology features sci-fi and fantasy stories written by ethnic Chinese authors living in various countries, and includes an introduction by bestselling novelist, Tess Gerritsen. Although I did not personally win anything, I’m thrilled to be a part of this anthology. You can read an excerpt of my story, Papa and Mama, which was published under a slightly different byline.…  Read More »

Tried My Contact Form & Didn’t Get a Response? Try Again.

If you wrote me a message using my contact form and never received a personal reply, please don’t be mad. Most unfortunately, I did not get your message. Yes, I know you got an auto-response and form reply telling you your message was “successfully sent”, but I didn’t actually get your email. I just discovered this breakdown in mail delivery, and after hours of troubleshooting, I managed to get it working again. It wasn’t any errors I made in the settings, but apparently what might be an extremely finicky server.…  Read More »

Apps for Writers

Are you a writer with an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch? If so, what apps should you invest in? Clearly, you’ll need at least one that can enable you to write and edit text documents, typically in Word’s .doc format. After this, you may also want to get other helper apps.…  Read More »

Site almost ready

After some days of tweaking CSS files and other code, I’ve finally gotten this new site into some semblance of decentness. I also took a while to sift through my numerous photos, to arrange several into a montage for the front page. Now what’s left is for me to fill it up with content—posts, a photo gallery, and more. Typed this post using Blogsy, which I’ll be reviewing soon on Appmodo.…  Read More »

Just Started

I’ve just gotten this site started, so it’s sans content or a proper design. Hopefully I can find the time to get things sorted out…  Read More »
